Voyeur

Somewhere between flash fiction and a prose poem. I can’t make up my mind which, so file under both!

*

She watches in silence as the dance unfolds, marvelling at the muscles as they shift and swim beneath the dark skin of his broad shoulders. She watches blades of bone sliding in time and rhythm with the gyrating hips, sees the snake of his spine undulating with each pelvic thrust.

He falters for a moment, retraces his steps, then walks to the CD player in the corner to reset the track at its start. He approaches the mirror again, sees her reflection in the glass and smiles.

‘Won’t be long,’ he says.

‘Take as long as you need,’ she says – and she means it. She would spend the whole hour she has booked watching him if he wanted it, even though this is an expensive studio and her own practice is falling behind.

balletShe looks away for a moment, suddenly self-conscious, until the pounding beat kicks in behind the swirling synthesised strings and he throws himself back into his routine, as oblivious again to her presence as he was before their exchange of smiles.

God, what a waste, she thinks, watching sweat dance like oil over the machinery of him, seeing beads of it glisten like seed pearls in the curls of his thick, black hair.

And then, for a moment, her mind removes him from this room and places him in his lover’s bed. She sees two broad backs, two muscled, arching spines, two oiled machines dancing and entwining in perfect harmony.

No. Not a waste at all.

Just different.

    1. It’s quite an old one – which must mean I’m getting worse! The most annoying thing about this post was the creeping paranoia when I was looking for an accompanying image! Found some great pics of black ballet dancers, but then thought ‘what if he’s not gay and sues?’ Like, yeah, the whole world’s reading my blog, ennit! Thanks for comment. 🙂

    1. Ha! Horses for courses… different things will hit the spot for different people, and it’s lovely when a piece of writing – old or new – achieves that. I’ve always quite liked this one too, as it just came out of nowhere when I was word doodling one day pretty much fully formed. Thanks for comment 🙂

  1. Wonderful piece 🙂 This just shows your writing talent for what it is – I always enjoy reading what you post as you always seem to come up with something different…and I mean ‘good’ different by the way! Thanks for linking to Prose for Thought 🙂
